Lesson summary

This lesson introduces Grade 1 learners to the foundational concepts of data handling, which is the mathematical process of collecting, sorting, representing, and interpreting information. In our daily lives in South Africa, we are surrounded by data. We see it in the different colours of taxis on the road, the variety of fruits at the market, or the number of learners in our school who speak isiZulu, isiXhosa, or Sesotho. Understanding data helps us make sense of the world, make choices, and answer questions. This lesson makes data handling tangible and fun by using familiar objects and scenarios.

Lesson notes

What is Data Handling? Data handling is a way to be a 'data detective'! It means we gather information (we call this data), we put it into groups to understand it better (sorting), we draw a picture of it to show others (representing), and then we answer questions about what we found (analysing).

Collecting and Sorting Data Collecting: This is the first step. We collect information by asking questions or by looking around us. For example, we can ask our friends, "What is your favourite colour?" Sorting: Once we have our information, we need to organise it. Sorting means putting similar things together. We can sort by one attribute at a time.

Attribute: An attribute is a characteristic of an object, like its colour, its shape, or its size.
