Welcome, Grade 1 learners! This week, we are going to explore two exciting types of measurement: Time and Money! We'll learn about the days of the week and how they make up weeks. We'll also learn about South African coins and how we use them to buy things. Understanding time helps us know when to go to school, when to eat, and when to play! Understanding money helps us buy delicious snacks at the tuck shop, toys, and other things we need and want. These skills are very important in our everyday lives in South Africa. Imagine knowing exactly when your favourite cartoon starts or having enough coins to buy a lollipop!
2.1 Time: Days of the Week and Weeks A day is one rotation of the Earth. We experience day and night as the Earth spins. We use days to organize our activities. A week is a group of 7 days.
The days of the week are: Monday: The first day of the school week! Many people go to work on Monday.
Tuesday: The second day.
Wednesday: The middle of the week! We sometimes call it "hump day." Thursday: Almost the end of the school week!
Friday: Yay! The last day of the school week!
Saturday: The first day of the weekend! Many people relax and play on Saturdays.
Sunday: The last day of the weekend. Many people go to church or spend time with family.
Important Fact: 1 week = 7 days Example 1: If today is Tuesday, what day is tomorrow?
Answer: Wednesday Example 2: If today is Friday, what day was yesterday?
Answer: Thursday Example 3: How many days are in one week?
Answer: 7 days Example 4: If Sipho's birthday is in 2 weeks, how many days until his birthday?
Answer: 2 weeks x 7 days/week = 14 days 2.2 Money: South African Coins In South Africa, we use Rands and cents. Coins are used for smaller amounts of money.
Let's look at the coins we use every day: 5c (5 cents): It's a small, copper-colored coin. 10c (10 cents): It's a bit bigger than the 5c coin and is silver-colored. 20c (20 cents): It's bigger than the 10c coin and is also silver-colored. 50c (50 cents): It's the largest cent coin, still silver coloured.
R1 (1 Rand): This coin is gold-colored with a silver ring around it. Remember, 100 cents make 1 Rand!
R2 (2 Rand): This coin is gold-colored with a silver ring around it. It is larger than the R1 coin.
R5 (5 Rand): This coin is silver-colored with a gold ring around it.
Important Fact: 1 Rand (R1) = 100 cents Example 1: If you have two 10c coins, how much money do you have?
Answer: 10c + 10c = 20c Example 2: You want to buy a sweet that costs 50c. You have a 20c coin and two 10c coins. Do you have enough money?
Answer: 20c + 10c + 10c = 40c. No, you don't have enough money. You need 10c more.
Example 3: You have a R2 coin. How many R1 coins are equal to this?
Answer: 2 R1 coins are equal to one R2 coin.
Example 4: You have a 5c, 10c, and 20c coin. How much money do you have in total?
Answer: 5c + 10c + 20c = 35c Guided Practice (With Solutions)
Question 1: Lindiwe's favourite TV show is on every Saturday. How many days must she wait from Monday until her show is on?
Solution: We need to count the days from Monday to Saturday: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday. That's 5 days (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday). So, Lindiwe must wait 5 days.
Question 2: Thabo wants to buy a packet of chips that costs R
3. He has one R2 coin. How much more money does he need?
Solution: The chips cost R
3. Thabo has R
2. To find out how much more he needs, we subtract: R3 - R2 = R
1. Thabo needs R1 more.
Question 3: Zanele has two 5c coins and one 10c coin. How much money does Zanele have in total?
Solution: Zanele has two 5c coins, which is 5c + 5c = 10c She also has one 10c coin. In total, she has 10c + 10c = 20c Zanele has 20c in total.
Question 4: How many days are there in 2 weeks?
Solution: We know that 1 week has 7 days. So, 2 weeks have 7 days + 7 days = 14 days. There are 14 days in 2 weeks. Independent Practice (Questions Only) What day comes after Wednesday? What day is two days after Friday? If today is Sunday, what day was yesterday? You have a 50c coin. Can you buy a sweet that costs 30c? How much change will you get? Nomusa wants to buy an apple for R
4. She has two R1 coins. How many more R1 coins does she need? Sipho has three 10c coins. How much money does he have? How many days are there in 3 weeks? You have one 20c coin and two 5c coins. How much money do you have in total? What coins could you use to pay for something that costs 70c? (Give one possible combination.) If today is Tuesday and your birthday is in one week, on what day is your birthday?
