Lesson summary

Physical education is a very important part of Life Skills. It helps us grow strong, learn to move our bodies in different ways, and have fun while doing it! In Grade 1, we learn basic movement skills and how to keep our bodies healthy and fit. Being fit means being able to run, jump, play, and do all sorts of activities without getting too tired. This is especially important in South Africa, where many children love to play outside with their friends and families, kicking a soccer ball, playing hopscotch, or running races. Understanding the importance of movement and fitness from a young age sets the foundation for a healthy and active life as we grow older.

Lesson notes

What are Gross Motor Skills? Gross motor skills are movements that use large muscles in our bodies. These muscles help us to move our arms, legs, and trunk.

Examples of gross motor skills are: Running: Moving quickly on your feet, taking big steps. Think of how you run to catch the school bus or chase a friend in the playground!

Jumping: Pushing off the ground with your legs and lifting yourself into the air. Jumping helps us hop over puddles or jump up to reach something.

Throwing: Using your arm to send an object into the air. Think of throwing a ball to a friend or throwing a beanbag into a target.

Catching: Using your hands to stop a moving object. Think of catching a ball that someone throws to you.

Hopping: Jumping on one foot and moving forward.

Skipping: A combination of a hop and a step, alternating feet. It's a fun way to move around!

Balancing: Staying steady while standing on one foot or walking along a line. Why are Gross Motor Skills Important? These skills are essential because they help us: Move around safely and confidently. Participate in sports and games. Develop coordination and balance. Improve our overall fitness. Build confidence. Fitness and Our Bodies Fitness means that our bodies are strong and healthy. When we are fit, we can: Run and play for longer without getting tired. Have more energy to learn and do fun things. Have strong muscles and bones. Be less likely to get sick. How Can We Get Fit?

We can get fit by: Exercising: Moving our bodies in different ways, such as running, jumping, dancing, and playing games.

Eating Healthy Foods: Fruits, vegetables, and other healthy foods give our bodies the energy and nutrients they need to grow strong.

Drinking Water: Water helps our bodies work properly and keeps us from getting dehydrated.

Getting Enough Sleep: Sleep allows our bodies to rest and recover.
