Physical education is an important part of Life Skills because it helps us learn how to move our bodies in different ways, become stronger, and stay healthy. In South Africa, where many children walk long distances to school and might play sports like soccer or netball in their communities, being physically fit and having good movement skills is very important. It helps us perform our daily activities with ease and enjoy playing with our friends. This week, we will focus on fundamental movement skills like running, jumping, and throwing, and understanding why physical activity makes us feel good.
a)
Running: Running is a basic movement skill where we move quickly on our feet. It involves using our legs, arms, and whole body to move forward. Why is running important? Running helps us to move quickly, escape danger, and participate in games. Imagine you are playing soccer with your friends in your township, and you need to run fast to get the ball before the other team!
How to run properly: Start with your feet shoulder-width apart. Keep your head up and look forward. Pump your arms back and forth, bending at the elbows. Lift your knees slightly. Land on the balls of your feet and push off with your toes. b)
Jumping: Jumping is when we use our leg muscles to propel ourselves off the ground and into the air. Why is jumping important? Jumping helps us to leap over things, reach for objects, and play games like skipping. Think about jumping over a puddle after a heavy rain in Johannesburg!
How to jump properly: Start with your feet shoulder-width apart. Bend your knees slightly. Swing your arms forward as you jump. Push off with both feet. Land softly on both feet, bending your knees. c)
Throwing (Underhand): Throwing is when we use our arm to send an object away from us. Underhand throwing is a type of throwing where we swing our arm from below our waist. Why is throwing important? Throwing helps us to play games like cricket or softball, and to pass objects to others. Imagine you are playing cricket in your backyard in Durban and you need to throw the ball to the wicketkeeper!
How to throw underhand properly: Hold the ball in your hand. Stand with one foot slightly in front of the other. Swing your arm back and down, like a pendulum. Release the ball as your arm swings forward. Aim at your target. d)
Why Physical Activity is Good for Us: Physical activity is any movement that makes our bodies work. This could include running, jumping, playing games, or even walking to school. Why is it important? It makes our muscles and bones strong. It helps us to stay at a healthy weight. It gives us more energy to play and learn. It makes us feel happy! Imagine you walked all the way from home to school. That’s physical activity! It makes your body strong. Guided Practice (With Solutions)
Question 1: Pretend you are running away from a tickling monster! Show me how you would run fast in a straight line. (Focus: Running)
Solution: The learner should run in a straight line, pumping their arms and lifting their knees. The teacher should observe and provide feedback on their form, encouraging them to keep their head up and look forward.
Commentary: This emphasizes running form and direction.
Question 2: Can you jump over this small line on the floor using both feet together? (Focus: Jumping)
Solution: The learner should bend their knees, swing their arms, and jump over the line, landing softly on both feet with bent knees.
Commentary: This focuses on the proper jumping technique and landing safely.
Question 3: Here is a soft ball and a bucket. Can you throw the ball underhand into the bucket? (Focus: Throwing Underhand)
Solution: The learner should stand a few feet away from the bucket, hold the ball, swing their arm underhand, and release the ball towards the bucket.
Commentary: Emphasizes underhand throwing technique and accuracy.
Question 4: Tell me one thing that happens to your body when you run around the playground. (Focus: Why Physical Activity is Good)
Solution: The learner might say: "My heart beats faster," or "I get sweaty," or "I feel happy."
Commentary: Checks the learner's understanding of the physiological effects of physical activity. Independent Practice (Questions Only) Run from one side of the playground to the other and back. Jump as high as you can three times. Throw the ball underhand to a partner ten times. Name two activities you do that are physical activities. What part of your body feels stronger after you run and jump? Show me what it looks like if you are sad and tired. Now show me what it looks like when you are excited and full of energy! What made the difference? Jump over three different obstacles, one after another. Imagine you are a soccer player chasing the ball. Show me how you run and kick the ball at the same time.
