This lesson focuses on building foundational skills in mathematical operations and problem-solving within the number range of 0 to
3
4. For Grade 1 learners in South Africa, these skills are essential for everyday life. They use these concepts when sharing snacks with friends at break time, counting money to buy from the spaza shop, playing games like Morabaraba, or helping their family count livestock or items in the home. By mastering addition, subtraction, doubling, and halving, learners develop critical thinking and numeracy skills that form the bedrock of their future mathematical understanding.
This section explains the core ideas for this week. We will use stories and examples that learners can easily understand.
A. Addition (+): Putting Numbers Together What it is: Addition is when we combine two or more groups of things to find out how many we have in total. We use the plus sign (+) to show we are adding. The answer is called the sum or total.
How we do it: Using Objects: We can use counters, stones, or even our fingers. We make one group, then make a second group, and finally count them all together.
Using a Number Line: We find the first number on the number line and then 'jump' forward the number of times shown by the second number.
Counting On: We hold the bigger number in our head and then count on using our fingers.
