This week, we're diving into the exciting world of patterns! Patterns are all around us, from the stripes on a zebra to the tiles on your kitchen floor. Understanding patterns helps us make predictions, solve problems, and appreciate the beauty of the world. In South Africa, recognizing patterns can help us understand things like the repeating designs in traditional beadwork, the sequence of events in a folktale, or even how farmers plant crops in rows. This week, we will focus on number patterns and simple rules that govern these patterns. Recognizing and creating patterns are foundational skills that will help you in many areas of mathematics as you grow.

A pattern is a sequence that repeats or follows a rule. Number patterns are simply patterns made up of numbers. In Grade 1, we focus on simple number patterns that have a constant difference. A constant difference means that the same number is added (or sometimes subtracted, although we’ll mainly focus on addition this week) each time to get the next number in the pattern. The rule is the description of what you do to each number to get to the next number.

Example 1: Growing Flowers Imagine you are planting a garden with your family in your backyard in Soweto. Each day, you plant more flowers.

Day 1: You plant 1 flower.

Day 2: You plant 2 flowers.

Day 3: You plant 3 flowers.

Day 4: You plant 4 flowers. What is the number pattern? 1, 2, 3, 4… What is the rule? Add 1 to the previous number. 1 + 1 = 2, 2 + 1 = 3, 3 + 1 =

4. What comes next? If you continue the pattern, on Day 5 you would plant 5 flowers.

Example 2: Sharing Marbles Let's say you have a bag of marbles to share with your friends in Durban. You decide to give each friend 2 marbles.

Friend 1: Receives 2 marbles.

Friend 2: Receives 4 marbles.

Friend 3: Receives 6 marbles.

Friend 4: Receives 8 marbles. What is the number pattern? 2, 4, 6, 8… What is the rule? Add 2 to the previous number. 2 + 2 = 4, 4 + 2 = 6, 6 + 2 =

8. What comes next? The next friend (Friend 5) would receive 10 marbles.

Example 3: Counting Oranges Imagine you're helping your grandmother pack oranges into bags at a fruit market in Cape Town. Each bag has 3 more oranges than the bag before it.

Bag 1: 3 oranges.

Bag 2: 6 oranges.

Bag 3: 9 oranges.

Bag 4: 12 oranges. What is the number pattern? 3, 6, 9, 12… What is the rule? Add 3 to the previous number. 3 + 3 = 6, 6 + 3 = 9, 9 + 3 =

Using Manipulatives: We can use counters (like small stones, beads, or even drawings of circles) to help us visualize and understand patterns.
