Lesson summary

This week, we will be learning about healthy living. In South Africa, it’s very important to understand how to stay healthy because it helps us grow strong, do well in school, and have lots of energy to play with our friends! If we are healthy, we can enjoy all the wonderful things our country has to offer, like playing soccer in the park or going to the beach. Sometimes, people in our communities get sick easily, and learning about healthy habits can help us protect ourselves and our families. Understanding the importance of hygiene, healthy food choices, and physical activity will set you on the path to a happy and healthy life.

Lesson notes

What is Healthy Living? Healthy living means doing things that keep our bodies strong and make us feel good. It's like building a strong house – you need good materials! Our bodies need good food, clean water, lots of sleep, and exercise to stay healthy.

Healthy Foods: Our bodies need different types of foods to grow big and strong. Think of your body like a car; it needs petrol (fuel) to move. Healthy foods are like the best petrol for your body!

Fruits: Fruits like bananas, apples, oranges, and mangoes are sweet and yummy. They help us stay healthy and fight off sickness. Imagine a juicy orange helping you fight off a cold! We have lots of delicious fruits in South Africa. Think of the watermelons in summer!

Vegetables: Vegetables like spinach, carrots, tomatoes, and broccoli might not always taste sweet, but they are super important for our bodies. They help us see well, grow strong bones, and keep our tummies happy. Think of carrots helping you see at night, like a superhero!

Proteins: Foods like chicken, fish, beans, and eggs help us build strong muscles. Think of chicken giving you the power to run fast! Many South Africans eat beans, like sugar beans, which are a great source of protein.

Grains: Foods like mielie-meal (used to make pap), bread, and rice give us energy to play and learn.

Example 1: Let's say Lerato eats a banana for breakfast. The banana helps Lerato have energy to play and learn at school. It also gives her vitamins to stay healthy.

Example 2: Sipho eats chicken and rice for dinner. The chicken helps Sipho grow strong muscles, and the rice gives him energy to run and play soccer with his friends.

Keeping Clean: Keeping clean is important for stopping germs from making us sick. Germs are tiny little creatures we can’t see, and they can make us feel yucky.

Washing Hands: We should wash our hands with soap and water before we eat, after we go to the toilet, and after we play outside. Imagine washing away all the tiny germs that could make you sick! Washing your hands is like giving them a bath to keep them clean!

Brushing Teeth: We should brush our teeth twice a day – once in the morning and once before bed. Brushing our teeth helps get rid of the food and germs that can cause cavities (holes) in our teeth. Think of brushing your teeth like giving them a scrub to keep them sparkling clean!

Bathing/Showering: It is also important to wash your body every day!

Drinking Clean Water: Our bodies need water to work properly. Water helps us digest our food, keeps us from getting too hot, and helps us think clearly. We should drink clean water every day. In some parts of South Africa, it can be hard to get clean water. It's important to ask a grown-up for help finding clean water to drink. Think of water as giving your body a drink to stay happy and healthy!

Physical Activity: Moving our bodies is important for keeping our hearts strong and our muscles healthy. We can do things like running, jumping, playing soccer, or dancing. Think of physical activity as giving your body a fun workout!

Example: Doing jumping jacks gets our hearts pumping faster and makes our muscles stronger.

Rest and Sleep: Our bodies need rest to repair themselves and grow. We should get enough sleep every night. When we sleep, our bodies are like a factory, fixing everything that got broken during the day.

Example: When you sleep, your brain sorts out all the things you learned at school, and your body gets ready for another fun day!

Unhealthy Foods: Some foods are yummy but not good for us if we eat them too much. These include sweets, chips, fizzy drinks, and fast food. These foods can make us feel tired and can hurt our teeth. It is okay to eat them sometimes, but we should eat healthy foods most of the time. Guided Practice (With Solutions)

Question 1: Name one fruit that is good for your body. Why is it good for you?

Solution: A banana is a good fruit for your body. It is good for you because it gives you energy to play and learn.

Commentary: This question encourages learners to recall specific examples of healthy foods and connect them to their benefits. The answer emphasizes energy provision, a relatable concept for young children.

Question 2: How many times a day should you brush your teeth? Why?

Solution: You should brush your teeth two times a day - once in the morning and once before bed. This is important because it removes food and germs that can cause cavities (holes) in your teeth.
