Lesson summary

This week, we will continue our journey with numbers, focusing on numbers from 0 to

2

0. Understanding these numbers is essential because we use them every day in our lives, from counting sweets we share with our friends to figuring out how many learners are in our class. In South Africa, knowing how to count and understand numbers helps us with everyday tasks like buying bread at the spaza shop, sharing amagwinya fairly, or even knowing which bus to take! Building a strong foundation with these numbers will help you in all your future mathematics lessons.

Lesson notes

This week we are focusing on different ways to understand and work with numbers from 0 to

2

0. This includes counting, putting numbers in order, and showing them using objects.

Counting: Counting is saying the numbers in the correct order. We can count forwards (1, 2, 3…) or backwards (20, 19, 18…).

Forward Counting: Starting at a number and adding one more each time.

Backward Counting: Starting at a number and taking one away each time.

Example 1 (Forward Counting): Let's count from 5 to

1

2. We say: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11,

1

2. Example 2 (Backward Counting): Let's count backwards from 15 to

8. We say: 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9,

8. Ordering Numbers: Ordering means putting numbers in the correct sequence, either from smallest to largest (ascending order) or from largest to smallest (descending order).

Smallest to Largest: Arranging numbers so they get bigger each time (e.g., 2, 5, 9, 13).

Largest to Smallest: Arranging numbers so they get smaller each time (e.g., 18, 12, 7, 1).

Example 3 (Smallest to Largest): Arrange these numbers from smallest to largest: 7, 3, 11,

1. Answer: 1, 3, 7, 11 Example 4 (Largest to Smallest): Arrange these numbers from largest to smallest: 16, 5, 9,

1

9. Answer: 19, 16, 9, 5 Representing Numbers: Representing numbers means showing a number using objects or drawings. This helps us visualize what the number means. We can use beads, counters, drawings of fruits, or anything else! Example 5 (Representing Numbers with Counters): Show the number 8 using counters.

We can put out 8 counters: O O O O O O O O Example 6 (Representing Numbers with Drawings): Draw circles to represent the number

1

3. We can draw 13 circles: O O O O O O O O O O O O O Before and After: Identifying the number that comes before and after a given number is crucial. The number before is one less. The number after is one more.

Example 7 (Before and After): What number comes before 10?

Answer: 9 What number comes after 10?

Answer: 11 Number Symbols and Number Names: We need to know how to read and write numbers using both symbols (like "12") and words (like "twelve").

Example 8 (Matching Symbol to Name): Match the symbol with the correct name: 17 = seventeen 4 = four 20 = twenty Guided Practice (With Solutions)

Question 1: Count forwards from 7 to

1

5. Solution: 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14,

1

5. Commentary: We start at 7 and add one each time until we reach

1

5. Question 2: Arrange these numbers from smallest to largest: 4, 12, 8, 1,

1

5. Solution: 1, 4, 8, 12,

1

5. Commentary: We look for the smallest number (1), then the next smallest (4), and continue until we have the largest number (15).

Question 3: Represent the number 11 using beads. Draw your answer.

Solution: O O O O O O O O O O O (11 beads)

Commentary: We draw eleven beads to show what the number 11 looks like.

Question 4: What number comes before 18? What number comes after 18?

Solution: Before 18:

1

7. After 18:

1

9. Commentary: The number before is one less than 18, and the number after is one more than

1

8. Question 5: Write the number name for the number

1

3. Solution: Thirteen

Commentary: We remember the written word for the number symbol "13". Independent Practice (Questions Only) Count backwards from 19 to

1

1. Arrange these numbers from largest to smallest: 6, 14, 2, 20,

9. Represent the number 16 using drawings of stars. What number comes before 5? What number comes after 5? Write the number name for the number

8. Count forwards from 3 to

1

7. Arrange these numbers from smallest to largest: 18, 7, 10, 3,

1

4. Represent the number 9 using counters. What number comes before 20? What number comes after 15? Write the number name for the number 11.
