This week, we're going to learn about staying healthy! Being healthy means taking care of our bodies so we can play, learn, and grow strong. It's like taking care of a beautiful garden – we need to give it the right things to help it flourish. In South Africa, staying healthy is super important because it helps us be active members of our families and communities. If we're healthy, we can go to school, help our parents, and play with our friends. We’ll be looking at different things we can do every day to keep ourselves healthy and happy.
What does it mean to be healthy? Being healthy means that your body is strong and working well. You have lots of energy to play, learn, and do the things you enjoy. It also means you're less likely to get sick. Think of your body like a car. To keep the car running well, you need to put in petrol, check the tyres, and wash it. Our bodies also need special things to stay healthy!
Healthy Habits: Washing Hands: Washing our hands is like magic for getting rid of tiny little creatures called germs. Germs can make us sick.
We should wash our hands: Before we eat. After we use the toilet. After we play outside. After we touch animals. Whenever our hands look dirty.
How to Wash Your Hands Properly: Wet your hands with clean water. Put soap on your hands. Rub your hands together to make bubbles for at least 20 seconds (sing the "Happy Birthday" song twice!). Make sure to scrub between your fingers, on the back of your hands, and under your nails. Rinse your hands well with clean water. Dry your hands with a clean towel or let them air dry.
Example: Imagine you are playing in the sand outside. You are building a fantastic sandcastle! But now it's time for lunch. If you don't wash your hands before eating, you might swallow some of the germs from the sand, and that could make you feel sick in your tummy.
Eating Healthy Foods: Our bodies need different foods to grow strong and healthy. Think of food as fuel for your body. Some foods give us lots of energy to run and play. Others help us grow tall and strong.
Fruits and Vegetables: These are packed with vitamins and minerals that help our bodies work properly. Think of a juicy orange, a crunchy carrot, or a sweet apple!
Example: Thando loves to eat pap and vleis, but his mom always makes sure he also has some spinach (morogo) or carrots with his meal. This helps Thando grow big and strong so he can play soccer with his friends.
Proteins: Proteins help us build strong muscles. Examples of protein include meat, chicken, fish, eggs, beans, and nuts.
Example: Zanele enjoys eating beans and rice. Beans are a good source of protein, which helps her muscles grow strong so she can run fast during athletics at school.
Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates give us energy to run, jump, and play. Examples include bread, rice, maize (mielies), and potatoes.
Example: Sipho eats pap (made from maize) every morning for breakfast. The pap gives him energy to concentrate in class and play on the playground.
Limiting Sugary Drinks and Snacks: Too much sugar can make us feel tired and can damage our teeth. Try to drink water instead of fizzy drinks and choose fruits instead of sweets.
Example: Aisha loves lollipops, but she knows that eating too many lollipops can hurt her teeth. She tries to eat an apple instead when she wants something sweet.
Drinking Water: Our bodies need water to stay hydrated and work properly. We should drink water throughout the day, especially when it's hot outside or after we've been playing.
Example: After playing netball with her friends, Nomusa always drinks a big glass of water. This helps her body cool down and replaces the water she lost while sweating.
Getting Enough Sleep: When we sleep, our bodies rest and repair themselves. We need to get enough sleep so we can wake up feeling refreshed and ready to learn.
Example: Mandla always goes to bed at 8 o'clock. This gives him enough time to sleep so he feels rested and ready to learn in class the next day. Guided Practice (With Solutions)
Question 1: Name one time when you should wash your hands.
Solution: You should wash your hands before you eat. Washing your hands removes germs that could make you sick.
Question 2: What is one healthy food you can eat?
Solution: An apple is a healthy food. Apples are fruits that give you vitamins and help you grow strong.
Question 3: Why is it important to drink water?
Solution: It is important to drink water because it keeps our bodies hydrated and helps them work properly. We need water to stay healthy and have energy to play.
Question 4: Can you name two things you should use to wash your hands?
Solution: You should use soap and water to wash your hands. The soap helps to trap and remove the germs, and the water washes them away. Independent Practice (Questions Only) Draw a picture showing yourself washing your hands. List three healthy foods you like to eat. Why is it important to get enough sleep? What is one thing you can do to stay healthy when you play outside? Thabo is feeling thirsty after playing soccer. What should he drink? Maria is offered a sweet and an apple. Which one is the healthier choice, and why? Name three times you should wash your hands during the school day. What happens to your body when you don't drink enough water? Ask your mom or dad for your favorite healthy meal and draw a picture of that meal and name its ingredients.
