Transformers are essential devices in our daily lives in Ghana. We see them on poles in our communities, managed by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), and in our electronic devices like phone chargers and television sets. They are crucial for stepping voltage up or down for efficient power transmission and use. However, no machine is perfect. Transformers lose some energy, mostly as heat, whenever they operate. Understanding these energy losses is vital for designing, choosing, and maintaining efficient electrical systems. This lesson will explore the different types of losses in a transformer, explain how they affect its performance, and teach us how to calculate its efficiency.

What are Transformer Losses?

A transformer is a highly efficient device, but not 100% efficient. Transformer losses are the difference between the power put into the transformer (input power) and the power that comes out of it (output power). This lost energy is primarily converted into heat, which warms up the transformer.
