Lesson summary

In our daily lives in Ghana, we are surrounded by a variety of animals. We eat some, like Tilapia and chicken (domestic fowl), while others, like the wall gecko, live in our homes, and frogs are common in our gardens and near water bodies. This lesson moves beyond simply identifying these animals. We will explore their economic importance – that is, how they affect our lives in terms of money, food, health, and the environment. Understanding this helps us appreciate the complex roles organisms play and make informed decisions about how we manage them, whether in farming, at home, or in our communities.

Lesson notes

A. What is "Economic Importance"?

In Biology, "economic importance" is not just about money (cedis and pesewas). It refers to the total effect (both positive and negative) that an organism has on human life. This includes its impact on: Financials: Income, jobs, trade (e.g., selling chicken at Makola Market). Food & Nutrition: Providing protein, vitamins, etc. (e.g., a meal of banku and tilapia). Health: Causing or preventing diseases (e.g., geckos eating mosquitoes that carry malaria). Environment: Its role in the ecosystem (e.g., frogs indicating a healthy water source). Culture & Society: Its use in festivals, traditional medicine, or the beliefs people have about it.

An organism can have both positive and negative economic importance at the same time.

B. Economic Importance of Selected Organisms Tilapia (*Tilapia sp.*)
