This lesson focuses on the final layers that are applied to a building's roof and floors, known as 'finishes'. These are not just for decoration; they are crucial for protecting the building from the weather, ensuring durability, providing safety, and making our living and working spaces comfortable. As future technicians, engineers, and homeowners in Ghana, understanding how to choose the right finish for the right situation—considering our climate, local materials, and budget—is a critical skill. We will explore common roof coverings and floor finishes used in Ghana, from traditional thatch to modern tiles, and learn the technology behind their application.
What are "Finishes" in Construction?
Finishes are the materials used as the final visible surface for different parts of a building, such as walls, ceilings, floors, and roofs. They serve three primary purposes: Protection: To protect the underlying structure from weather (rain, sun), wear and tear, and chemical damage. Aesthetics: To provide a visually pleasing appearance. Function: To provide a surface suitable for the intended use of the space (e.g., a non-slip floor in a bathroom).
This lesson focuses on two key areas: Roof Finishes (Coverings) and Floor Finishes.
