Lesson summary

This lesson transitions from understanding what robots *are* to critically analysing and communicating what robots *do* in our society. In Ghana today, from drone delivery of medical supplies by Zipline to automation in our banking and manufacturing sectors, robotics is no longer just science fiction; it's a reality impacting our lives and economy. As future engineers, scientists, and innovators, it is not enough to simply build a robot. You must be able to clearly communicate its purpose, design, impact, and challenges to others. This lesson focuses on a crucial professional skill: creating and evaluating a technical report.

Lesson notes

This lesson focuses on two main concepts: The Technical Report and The Peer-Review Process. Concept 1: The Structure of a Technical Report

A technical report is a formal document that describes the process, progress, or results of a technical or scientific research project. It is different from an essay because it is objective, data-driven, and follows a strict structure. It is designed for a specific audience (e.g., a manager, a potential investor, other engineers) to understand a topic quickly and clearly.

Here are the essential sections of a simple technical report:

| Section | Purpose | What to Include (Example: A Report on Zipline Drones in Ghana) | | ----------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | Title Page | To state the report's title, author(s), date, and institution (your school name). | *Title:* "An Analysis of the Impact of Zipline's Autonomous Drones on Medical Delivery in the Ashanti Region." *Author(s):* Ama Danso, Kofi Mensah *Date:* 21st October 2023 | | Abstract / Summary | A brief overview (100-150 words) of the entire report. It should state the problem, the approach, the key findings, and the main conclusion. | Briefly mention the challenge of last-mile medical delivery, state that Zipline's drones are the solution studied, summarise the finding of reduced delivery times, and conclude on its positive impact. | | 1.0 Introduction | To provide background information on the topic, state the problem being addressed, and outline the report's purpose and scope. | Explain the logistical challenges of transporting blood and medicine to rural clinics in Ghana. State the report's purpose: to evaluate the effectiveness of Zipline's drone solution. | | 2.0 Methodology / Approach | To explain *how* you gathered your information. This shows your work is credible. | "Information was gathered from online sources including Zipline's official website, news articles from Joy FM and Citi News, and a World Health Organization report on medical drones." | | 3.0 Results / Findings | To present the data and information you found in an objective way. Use bullet points, tables, or graphs. Do not give your opinion here, just the facts. | - Zipline operates 24/7 from distribution centres in Omenako, Mpanya, etc. - Delivery time to remote clinics reduced from 3-4 hours by road to 30-45 minutes by drone. - Over 1 million vaccine doses delivered via drone in Ghana. | | 4.0 Discussion | To interpret your findings. *What do the results mean?* Here, you can analyse the significance of the data and discuss any limitations or challenges. | "The drastic reduction in delivery time (Finding 2) directly translates to lives saved... However, a challenge is the high initial cost of setting up a distribution centre." | | 5.0 Conclusion | To summarise the most important points of the report and restate the main message. | "In conclusion, the application of autonomous drones by Zipline has revolutionised medical logistics in Ghana, significantly improving healthcare access in rural areas." | | 6.0 Recommendations | To suggest specific actions that should be taken based on your conclusions. These should be practical and clear. | 1. The government should partner with Zipline to expand service to the northern regions. 2. STEM curricula in SHS should include case studies on such local robotic applications. | | References | To list all the sources you cited in your report. | List the websites, articles, and reports you used. E.g., "Zipline. (2023). *Our Impact in Ghana*. Retrieved from [website URL]". | Concept 2: The Peer-Review Process - Constructive Criticism
