Lesson summary

Welcome, future innovators and craftspeople! Today, we are exploring one of the most critical skills in woodwork: choosing the right material for the job. In Ghana, from the beautiful carved stools in a chief's palace to the sturdy wooden fishing boats used along our coasts, and the very desks and chairs we use in this classroom, the choice of wood matters. A wrong choice can lead to a project that breaks easily, rots in the rain, or costs far too much. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to think like an expert carpenter, selecting the perfect timber to bring your creative ideas to life, ensuring they are strong, beautiful, and long-lasting.

Lesson notes

A. Understanding "Materials" in Woodwork

When we talk about "materials" in woodwork, we are not just talking about the wood itself. It includes everything needed to complete the project: Solid Wood (Timber): The primary material. Adhesives: Glues used to join wood pieces together (e.g., PVA glue). Fasteners: Mechanical devices for joining (e.g., nails, screws). Finishes: Coatings applied to protect and beautify the wood (e.g., varnish, paint, sanding sealer, lacquer).

Our main focus today is on selecting the primary material: Timber. B. Common Ghanaian Timbers and Their Properties

Ghana is blessed with a rich variety of timber species. An expert woodworker knows the character of each one. Here is a table of some common timbers you will encounter:
