Good morning, class. Look around you. From the digital clock on your phone or wrist, to the display on a microwave oven at home, the fuel pump at a GOIL station, or the scoreboard at the Baba Yara stadium, we see numbers displayed electronically everywhere. How does a device show the number '8', and then change to show a '7'? The magic behind many of these displays is a simple but brilliant component called the 7-segment display. Today, we are going to demystify this component and learn how to control it ourselves. Understanding this is a fundamental step into the world of digital electronics, the technology that powers our modern world.

A. What is a 7-Segment Display?

A 7-segment display is an electronic display device for displaying decimal numbers (and some letters). As its name suggests, it consists of seven individual light-emitting diodes (LEDs) arranged in a rectangular fashion. An eighth LED is sometimes included for the decimal point (dp).

Each of the seven LEDs is called a segment. By turning on specific combinations of these segments, we can represent the digits 0 through 9. The segments are universally labelled with the letters a, b, c, d, e, f, and g.
