Every day in Ghana, we see thousands of vehicles on our roads, from 'trotros' and taxis to private cars and heavy-duty trucks. None of these can move safely or efficiently without one of the most critical components: the wheels and tyres. Understanding wheels and tyres is not just for mechanics; it is essential for every driver and passenger to ensure safety, save money on fuel, and get the best performance from a vehicle. Worn-out or improperly maintained tyres are a major cause of accidents on our highways. This lesson will introduce you to the parts, types, and essential markings of wheels and tyres, giving you practical knowledge you can use for the rest of your life.
Part A: The Vehicle Wheel
A wheel is the circular component that the tyre is fitted onto. It has two primary functions: It supports the entire weight of the vehicle. It transfers the driving and braking forces from the axle to the tyre.
i. Parts of a Wheel Let's look at the basic parts of a standard car wheel. (Teacher should draw this on the board or show a chart). Rim: This is the outer edge of the wheel where the tyre is mounted. It has a specific shape to hold the tyre bead securely. Disc (or Spider): This is the central part of the wheel that connects the rim to the hub. The design of the disc gives the wheel its stylish appearance. Hub: The very centre of the wheel, which fits over the vehicle's axle. Bolt Holes: These are the holes in the disc through which lug nuts or bolts are passed to fasten the wheel securely to the vehicle's hub. Valve Stem Hole: A small hole in the rim where the tyre's air valve is fitted.
