This lesson builds upon the fundamental skills (like passing, footwork, and shooting) that we have learned in previous classes. Today, we move from just practicing skills in isolation to applying them in a real, dynamic game situation. Understanding and using rules is what separates simple play from organised sport. In Ghana, whether playing football with friends in the neighbourhood, "ampe" on the school compound, or competing in Inter-Schools events (Inter-Co), knowing the rules and working as a team is essential for success, safety, and fun. This lesson will use Netball as our practical example to bring these concepts to life.
This section covers the essential theory needed to play a structured game. We will focus on the fundamental rules of Netball.
A. The Game of Netball: Basic Setup Netball is a fast-paced, non-contact team sport. The objective is to score goals by shooting a ball through a high hoop. Teams: Two teams of seven players each. Court: The court is divided into three thirds: a centre third and two goal thirds. There is also a goal circle at each end. Positions: Each player has a specific position and is only allowed in certain areas of the court.

B. Fundamental Rules for Game Play Starting the Game (The Centre Pass): The game begins with a pass from the centre circle. The Centre player must stand with at least one foot completely within the centre circle. After the umpire blows the whistle, the Centre must pass the ball within 3 seconds. The ball must be touched in the centre third before it can go to the goal third. Teams alternate taking the centre pass after each goal is scored. Footwork (The Most Important Rule!): This rule controls movement with the ball. Once you catch the ball, you cannot run or walk with it. Landing on ONE foot: This foot is called your "landing foot." It must stay on the ground. You can pivot (turn) on the ball of this foot. You can step with your other foot as many times as you like, but the landing foot must not be lifted and put down again until you have passed the ball. Landing on TWO feet simultaneously: You can choose either foot to be your landing foot. The other foot can be moved. Once you choose, you cannot change your landing foot. Penalty for incorrect footwork: A "free pass" is awarded to the opposing team from where the infringement occurred.
