Netball is one of the most popular team sports in Ghanaian schools, especially during Inter-House and Inter-School (Inter-Co) competitions. While passing and moving are important, a team cannot win without scoring. This lesson focuses on the single most crucial skill for winning a netball match: shooting. We will break down the roles of the shooters and learn the correct technique to score goals accurately and consistently. Mastering this skill not only helps in winning games but also builds confidence, discipline, and focus, which are valuable traits in all aspects of life. This lesson builds on our previous work on footwork and chest passes.
This section covers the core knowledge you need to become a good netball shooter. A. The Importance of Shooting in Netball
In netball, the ultimate goal is to score more points than your opponent. The *only* way to score a point (a goal) is by shooting the ball through the opponent's goal ring. A team can have the best defenders and the fastest passers, but if they cannot shoot accurately, they will never win. Therefore, shooting is the final and most critical action in any attacking play. A good shooter can turn a game around in minutes. B. The Official Shooters: Goal Shooter (GS) and Goal Attack (GA)
In a team of seven players, only two are allowed to shoot. They are the Goal Shooter and the Goal Attack. They must be inside the Goal Circle (also called the shooting circle) to attempt a shot.
| Feature | Goal Shooter (GS) | Goal Attack (GA) | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | Primary Role | To score goals. This is their main job. | To score goals AND to create scoring opportunities (feed the GS). | | Playing Area | Allowed only in the attacking Goal Third and the Goal Circle. Their movement is restricted. | Allowed in the attacking Goal Third, the Goal Circle, and the Centre Third. More freedom to move. | | Key Skills | Exceptional accuracy, calm under pressure, ability to hold their position against defenders, good rebounding skills. | High accuracy, agility and speed, excellent passing skills, good decision-making (when to shoot vs. when to pass). | | Analogy | Think of the GS as a specialist striker in football, whose main job is to be in the penalty box and score. | Think of the GA as an attacking midfielder in football, who both scores and creates chances for others. |
