This lesson breaks down a building into its two main parts: the Substructure (the hidden foundation below the ground) and the Superstructure (the visible part we live and work in). Key Definitions Substructure: This is the part of a building that is constructed below the ground level. Its main function is to transfer all the loads from the building (dead loads like the weight of materials, and live loads like people and furniture) safely to the supporting ground (the soil). It is the foundation and anchor of the entire building. The substructure ends at the ground floor level, typically at the Damp Proof Course (DPC). Think of it like the roots of a tree: You don't see them, but they hold the entire tree firmly in place. Superstructure: This is the portion of the building that is constructed above the ground level. It is the visible part of the building that serves its intended purpose, whether it's for living, working, or storage. It includes the walls, columns, beams, floors, roof, doors, windows, and all the finishes. Think of it like the trunk, branches, and leaves of a tree: This is the part you see and use.
