Lesson summary

This lesson introduces the classification of human diseases. Understanding how diseases are grouped is not just for doctors; it is essential knowledge for every individual to live a healthy life. In Ghana, we face a range of health challenges, from infectious diseases like malaria and cholera to rising rates of chronic conditions like hypertension and diabetes. By learning to classify diseases, we can better understand their causes, how they spread, and most importantly, how to prevent them. This knowledge empowers students to make informed decisions about their own health, the health of their families, and their communities.

Lesson notes

What is a Disease?

A disease is any harmful deviation from the normal structural or functional state of an organism. It is a condition that impairs the normal functioning of the body and is typically manifested by distinguishing signs and symptoms. Why Do We Classify Diseases?

Classifying diseases is crucial for several reasons: Diagnosis and Treatment: Grouping diseases with similar characteristics helps doctors identify them more easily and determine the best course of treatment. Prevention and Control: Understanding if a disease is infectious helps public health officials (like the Ghana Health Service) to implement measures to stop its spread (e.g., vaccination, quarantine, public sanitation campaigns). Research: Classification allows scientists to study trends, causes, and effective cures for specific groups of diseases. Public Awareness: It helps the general public understand health risks and take preventive actions. Major Classifications of Human Diseases

There are several ways to classify diseases, but we will focus on two of the most common and important methods. Classification 1: Communicable vs. Non-Communicable Diseases
