Lesson summary

Patterns are all around us in Ghana. We see them in the intricate designs of Kente and Smock fabrics, the arrangement of seats in a church or mosque, and even in the way a farmer plants rows of crops. Understanding the mathematics behind these patterns helps us to predict future outcomes, make better plans, and solve real-world problems. This lesson focuses on a specific type of pattern called an Arithmetic Progression (AP), where the pattern grows by a constant amount each time. We will learn how to describe these patterns with formulas and use them to find any term in the pattern and the total sum of its parts.

Lesson notes

Starter Activity: The Matchstick Pattern (10 mins) *In groups, observe the pattern below made with matchsticks. Draw the next two patterns in the sequence.*

*Discuss these questions in your group:* How many matchsticks are in Figure 1? Figure 2? Figure 3? How many new matchsticks are you adding each time to get the next figure? Can you predict how many matchsticks will be in Figure 6?

This activity introduces the idea of a sequence that increases by a constant amount.
