This lesson introduces the fundamental categories of materials used in engineering and everyday life. From the roofing sheets on our homes and the cooking pots (`dadesen`) in our kitchens to the cars and "tro-tros" on our roads, every product is made from a specific material chosen for its unique properties. Understanding these materials—why a nail is made of steel and a window frame of aluminium—is the first step to becoming a skilled technician, engineer, or innovator. This knowledge is essential for making, repairing, and designing things effectively. We will explore the main families of metals (ferrous and non-ferrous) and also look at important non-metallic materials like plastics.
What are Engineering Materials?
Engineering materials are the "building blocks" used to create everything from simple tools to complex machines. They are chosen based on their properties, such as strength, weight, cost, and resistance to heat or rust. We can group them into three main categories: Metals, Polymers (Plastics), and Ceramics. Today, we focus on metals and plastics.
