In Ghana, our agriculture is heavily dependent on rainfall, which is becoming increasingly unreliable due to climate change. The long dry season, especially in the northern savannah and even in the south, limits farmers to only one or two cropping seasons a year. To ensure food security, increase farmers' income, and make agriculture a year-round business, we must find efficient ways to supply water to our crops. This lesson explores modern irrigation methods that help us use our precious water resources wisely to grow more food. Understanding these technologies is crucial for the future of farming in Ghana.

2.1 What is Irrigation?

Definition: Irrigation is the artificial application of water to land or soil to assist in the growing of crops. In simple terms, it is the practice of watering plants when natural rainfall is insufficient.

Importance in Ghana: Overcoming Unreliable Rainfall: Allows farming during the dry season and in areas with low rainfall (e.g., Upper East, Upper West, Northern Regions). Increased Crop Yield: Proper water supply at critical growth stages (like flowering and fruiting) significantly increases the amount of produce a farmer can harvest. Year-Round Farming: Farmers can cultivate high-value crops like tomatoes, peppers, and cabbage throughout the year, providing a steady income. Crop Diversification: Enables the cultivation of crops that require more water than is naturally available in a particular area. Efficient Use of Water: Modern irrigation methods use less water compared to traditional methods like flood irrigation or using a watering can, which is vital for water conservation. 2.2 Modern Irrigation Method 1: Drip Irrigation (Trickle Irrigation)
