This lesson explores the essential management practices that farmers use to ensure their animals are healthy, productive, and profitable. Understanding these principles is crucial, not just for future farmers, but for anyone who wants to understand our food system, ensure food security in Ghana, and perhaps even start a small animal-rearing business at home.
2.1 What is Animal Production Management?
Definition: Animal Production Management refers to the series of decisions and actions involved in caring for and raising farm animals for the purpose of producing meat, milk, eggs, wool, or other products. It is the application of scientific principles and business skills to make animal farming successful.
Importance in Ghana: Food Security: Provides essential protein (meat, eggs, milk) for our population. Employment: Creates jobs for farmers, veterinary officers, feed producers, and marketers. Income: A source of livelihood for millions of rural and urban families. Foreign Exchange: Export of products like processed poultry can earn money for the country. Raw Materials: Provides raw materials like leather and manure (for fertilizer). 2.2 Housing Systems (Systems of Management)
This refers to the environment where animals are kept. The choice of system depends on the type of animal, the farmer's capital, available land, and the scale of production.
