Lesson summary

Farming in Ghana, especially for our staple crops like maize, yam, and cowpea, has traditionally involved a lot of hard physical labour. From clearing the land to planting, weeding, and harvesting, the work is demanding. However, modern science and technology are changing this story. This lesson introduces some of these exciting new tools and methods—emerging technologies—that are making farming smarter, faster, and easier for Ghanaian farmers. Understanding these technologies is crucial for anyone interested in the future of food production and creating a profitable agribusiness.

Lesson notes

(Teacher's Note: Begin the lesson by asking students about the most difficult tasks their parents or relatives face on their farms. This will create a relatable context before introducing technology as a solution. You may also start by showing a short 5-minute video documentary on drone usage in agriculture as suggested in the NaCCA exemplars.)

A. What are Emerging Technologies in Agriculture?

Definition: Emerging technologies are new, innovative tools, systems, and methods that are still developing but are already starting to make a significant impact on farming. They often use digital data, computers, and advanced machinery to make agriculture more efficient, productive, and less labour-intensive. Think of them as the "new way" of farming.
