This lesson moves beyond the common misconception of farming as a difficult, low-paying job for the uneducated. We will explore agriculture as a modern, profitable business or "enterprise." By studying what makes arable crop farms in Ghana successful, students will understand the immense prospects and opportunities available in the agricultural sector. This knowledge is vital for any young Ghanaian, whether they become a farmer, an entrepreneur in the value chain, a policymaker, or an informed consumer. We will focus on the key crops that feed our nation—cereals, legumes, and tubers—and uncover the secrets to their successful cultivation as a business.

2.1 What is an Arable Crop Enterprise?

First, let's break down the term. Arable Crop: Any crop that is cultivated on land that has been ploughed or tilled. These are typically field crops grown on a large scale. Enterprise: A business or a company organised for commercial purposes. It is profit-oriented, involves planning, and takes calculated risks.

Therefore, an Arable Crop Enterprise is a business venture focused on the cultivation of field crops like maize, rice, yam, or groundnuts with the primary goal of making a profit.

This is very different from Subsistence Farming, where the main goal is to produce enough food to feed one's family, with only a small surplus, if any, sold in the market.
