Lesson summary

Welcome, students! Today, we are moving beyond just thinking about health as "not being sick." We will explore a bigger, more powerful idea called Wellness. As SHS students in Ghana, you are managing many things: preparing for WASSCE, making new friends in the dormitory, handling your pocket money, and keeping up with your studies. Wellness is the active process of making choices that help you succeed in all these areas and live a fulfilling life. Understanding the different parts of your wellness will empower you to build habits that will help you not just in school, but for the rest of your life. This lesson is about giving you the tools to take charge of your own well-being.

Lesson notes

A. What is the Difference Between Health and Wellness?

Many people use these words to mean the same thing, but they are slightly different. Health: This is usually about the state of your body. It means you are free from illness, injury, or disease. For example, if you don't have malaria or a broken bone, you can be considered healthy. Health is often something you *have*. Wellness: This is a more active concept. It is the lifelong process of making conscious decisions to live a healthy and fulfilling life. It’s about striving for balance in all areas of your life, not just your body. Wellness is something you *do*.

Analogy: Think of a car. Health is the car not being broken. The engine works, and the tyres are not flat. Wellness is actively taking care of the car: putting the correct fuel in it, checking the oil regularly, washing it, and driving it safely to enjoy your journey.

Wellness is about thriving, not just surviving. B. The Four Key Components of Wellness
