This lesson introduces two powerful counting techniques: permutations and combinations. In our daily lives in Ghana, we are constantly faced with situations where we need to count possibilities. For example, how many different ways can the Black Stars starting eleven be arranged on the field? How many different committees can be formed in our SRC? How many possible mobile money PINs can be created? Permutations and combinations provide a systematic way to answer these questions without listing every single possibility. Understanding these concepts is fundamental to probability, statistics, and making informed decisions based on data.
Part A: The Foundation - The Fundamental Counting Principle (Multiplication Rule)
This is the bedrock of permutations and combinations.
Concept: If one event can occur in `m` ways, and a second independent event can occur in `n` ways, then the two events can occur in `m × n` ways.
Explanation: Think about choosing your lunch at the school canteen. Event 1: Choosing a main dish. Let's say you have 3 options: Waakye, Jollof Rice, Kenkey. (m = 3) Event 2: Choosing a protein. Let's say you have 2 options: Fried Fish, Chicken. (n = 2)
