Lesson summary

This lesson moves beyond simple calculation of averages and drawing charts. It focuses on the power of statistical reasoning—the skill of using data to make convincing arguments, support decisions, and understand different viewpoints. In Ghana today, from government policy-making and business decisions to our own personal choices, data is everywhere. This lesson will equip learners with the ability to critically analyze data presented in the news, on social media, and in reports, and to use it to form and defend their own logical conclusions.

What is Statistical Reasoning?

Statistical reasoning is the process of thinking with numbers. It is not just about calculating statistics like mean, median, or mode. It is about: Reading and Understanding Data: What does the table or chart tell us? Analyzing Data: Finding patterns, identifying the highest and lowest values, calculating totals and percentages. Making Inferences: Drawing a conclusion or forming an opinion based on the evidence in the data. Building an Argument: Using the analysis as evidence to support your conclusion.

A strong statistical argument has two parts: The Claim/Recommendation: What you think should be done. The Justification/Evidence: The specific numbers and calculations from the data that prove your point.
