Lesson summary

Welcome, future aviation professionals! Today, we explore one of the most exciting topics: how you can turn your passion for flight into a real career. Many of us see planes flying over Accra from Kotoka International Airport or see the new airports developing in Kumasi and Tamale and only think of pilots. However, the aviation industry is a huge team with hundreds of different jobs. This lesson will serve as your map, showing you the different roads—the "learning pathways"—you can take after SHS to become a pilot, an engineer, an air traffic controller, or another expert in this field.

Lesson notes

What is a "Learning Pathway"?

Think of a learning pathway as a detailed road map from where you are now (an SHS student) to your dream job in aviation. It's not just about getting a degree; it's a specific sequence of: Education: SHS, and sometimes a university degree. Specialised Training: Attending a specific aviation school. Licensing and Certification: Passing exams set by the governing body to prove your skills. Practical Experience: Gaining hands-on hours and on-the-job training.

In Ghana, the primary regulatory body that oversees most licensing and certification is the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA). Think of them as the "WAEC" of the aviation world; they set the standards and issue the licenses that allow you to work. The Foundation: Senior High School (SHS)

Your journey begins right here. While you can enter some aviation careers from any SHS programme, certain subjects are critical for technical and flight roles. Science Programme: This is the most direct route for pilots, engineers, and air traffic controllers. Strong performance in Mathematics, Physics, and English is non-negotiable. Technical Programme: Excellent for aspiring Aircraft Maintenance Technicians. General Arts / Business: Can be a pathway for roles in airport management, airline marketing, logistics, and Cabin Crew, but you may need to take extra courses later. WASSCE Results: A strong WASSCE certificate is your entry ticket to any further training. Good grades (typically A1-C6) in core subjects are essential. Exploring Specific Learning Pathways
