Lesson summary

This lesson moves beyond seeing physical activity as just sports or organised exercise. We will explore how everyday actions—from sweeping the compound to walking to the market—are valuable forms of physical activity that contribute significantly to our health. In a world where lifestyles are becoming more sedentary, understanding and valuing these daily movements is crucial for preventing diseases like hypertension and diabetes, which are becoming more common in Ghana. This lesson empowers learners to see their own daily lives as an opportunity for maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle, preparing them to build lifelong habits for well-being.

Lesson notes

This section breaks down the essential knowledge needed to apply the concept of physical activity. Concept 1: What is Physical Activity? Physical Activity is any bodily movement produced by your skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure.

Think of it this way: if you are not sleeping or sitting/lying down completely still, you are likely engaging in some form of physical activity. It is a broad concept that includes everything from simple chores to competitive sports.

Key Distinction: Physical Activity vs. Exercise It is important to understand the difference: Physical Activity: The broad, all-encompassing term for any movement that uses energy. It is often unplanned and part of your daily routine. *Example:* Walking from the classroom to the dining hall, weeding the garden, fetching water. Exercise: A *subcategory* of physical activity. It is planned, structured, repetitive, and intentional movement intended to improve or maintain physical fitness. *Example:* Going for a 30-minute jog every morning, following a workout video, lifting weights at a gym.

In summary: All exercise is physical activity, but not all physical activity is exercise. This lesson focuses on the whole big circle of Physical Activity. Concept 2: The Four Domains of Physical Activity To better identify activities in our lives, we can group them into four "domains" or areas of life.
