This lesson focuses on percentage change, a fundamental mathematical concept that is essential for everyday life in Ghana. From understanding discounts at Melcom or Shoprite, to calculating the increase in our ECG or Ghana Water bills, to making sense of changes in tro-tro fares or school fees, percentage change is all around us. By mastering this topic, learners will develop crucial financial literacy skills, enabling them to make informed decisions as consumers and citizens. This lesson will equip learners to not just calculate percentages, but to *analyse* and *interpret* what these changes mean in practical, real-world scenarios.
A. What is Percentage Change?
Percentage change is a measure of how much a quantity has changed relative to its original value, expressed as a percentage. It tells us whether a value has gone up (an increase) or down (a decrease).
The fundamental formula is: Percentage Change = (Change in Value / Original Value) × 100%
Where: Change in Value = New Value – Original Value Original Value = The starting amount or the initial value. New Value = The final amount after the change.
