Welcome, students! Today, we begin our journey into the world of Agriculture. Many of you might think of Agriculture as just an old man with a cutlass on a farm. However, it is much more than that. The waakye you ate for breakfast, the cotton in your school uniform, the wood for your desk, and the jobs your parents do—all are connected to Agriculture. It is the backbone of Ghana's economy and our very survival. This lesson will open your eyes to the true meaning of Agriculture, its immense importance to us as Ghanaians, and the many exciting career paths it offers.
This section contains the core content you will need to teach the lesson. A. The Meaning of Agriculture
The word "Agriculture" comes from two Latin words: 'Ager' which means field or soil. 'Cultura' which means cultivation.
So, literally, it means "cultivation of the soil." However, this old meaning is too simple for today.
A more complete, modern definition is: Agriculture is the art, science, and business of cultivating the soil, producing crops, and raising livestock for human use and economic gain.
