Lesson summary

Energy is the backbone of our modern life in Ghana. It powers our homes, schools, hospitals, and industries. We all know the challenges we face with inconsistent power supply, often called 'dumsor'. As future engineers and leaders, understanding where our energy comes from and how we can make it more reliable, affordable, and clean is crucial. This lesson explores renewable energy – power from sources that don't run out, like the sun, wind, and water. We will discover how these energy sources are not just about keeping the lights on, but about building a healthier, wealthier, and more sustainable future for Ghana and the world, in line with global goals for development.

Lesson notes

2.1 What is Renewable Energy?

Renewable energy is energy derived from natural sources that are replenished over a short period. They are sustainable, meaning they won't run out as a result of our use. Examples in Ghana: Solar Energy: From the sun's rays (e.g., Navrongo Solar Power Plant, solar panels on traffic lights and homes). Hydropower: From moving water (e.g., the Akosombo and Bui Dams). Wind Energy: From the movement of air (Potential projects in Ada and along the coast). Biomass: From organic matter like wood, crop waste (e.g., sawdust, coconut husks), and animal manure.

This is different from Non-Renewable Energy, which comes from sources that will eventually run out. Once we use them, they are gone for millions of years. Examples in Ghana: Fossil Fuels: Crude oil (from the Jubilee and TEN fields), natural gas, and coal. Burning these releases harmful gases into the atmosphere. 2.2 Major Benefits of Renewable Energy to Humanity

Renewable energy sources offer significant advantages that can be grouped into three main categories:
