Welcome, students. Today, we are exploring a very important topic: Support Systems in Agriculture. Think about our favourite foods like Jollof rice, fufu with light soup, or roasted plantain. The journey of these foods from the farm to our plate is not managed by the farmer alone. A successful farmer is like the captain of a football team; they need coaches, doctors, financiers, and technical staff to succeed. In agriculture, these helpers are called "support systems." They are organisations and institutions that provide the money, knowledge, technology, and rules needed to make our agricultural sector strong.
A. What are Key Actors in Agriculture?
The agricultural value chain involves several people who play different roles to get food from the farm to our tables. The main ones are: Farmers: The producers. They are the ones who cultivate crops (like maize, cocoa, yam) and rear animals (like poultry, goats, cattle). They are the starting point of the value chain. Traders (or Middlemen/women): These are the connectors. They buy produce from farmers, often in rural areas, and transport it to markets in towns and cities for sale. The "market queen" is a powerful example of a trader. Processors: These are the transformers. They take raw agricultural produce and change it into other products, often adding value. For example, a processor turns raw cassava into gari or turns fresh pineapples into juice and canned fruit. Nkulenu Industries Ltd. is a famous Ghanaian processor. B. What is a Support System in Agriculture?
A support system in agriculture refers to the network of organisations, institutions, and services that provide assistance to the key actors (farmers, traders, processors) to improve their efficiency, productivity, and profitability.
They provide the "help" that these actors need to do their jobs better. This help can be in the form of money, advice, new technology, or fair rules. C. Categories and Examples of Support Organisations in Ghana
