In our daily lives in Ghana, we are constantly connected. We use our phones to send WhatsApp messages, make Mobile Money transactions, browse the internet, and watch videos. We use computers in internet cafés or schools to do research. But have we ever stopped to think about *how* the information—the message, the money, the video—travels from one device to another? This lesson explores the physical pathways and invisible waves that make all this communication possible. We will learn about the two main ways data travels: through physical cables (Guided Media) and through the air (Unguided Media).
This section explains the core content for the lesson. A. What is a Transmission Medium?
A transmission medium is the physical path or non-physical channel through which data travels from a sender to a receiver. Think of it as the road that cars (data) use to travel from one town to another. This "road" can be a physical cable you can see and touch, or it can be invisible waves travelling through the air.
This leads us to the two main categories of transmission media. B. Guided Network Systems (Wired Networks)
Guided media are also called Wired or Bounded media. In these systems, the data signal is guided along a physical path. The data is "bound" to the cable.
