This lesson introduces the concept of stakeholders in a building construction project. In Ghana, we see new buildings going up every day—from our neighbours' houses to large projects like the new school block, shopping malls, or hospitals. These projects are not built by one person alone. They require a team of professionals and organisations working together. Understanding who these people are and what they do is the first step to understanding how any building project successfully moves from an idea to a physical structure.
A. What is a Stakeholder?
A stakeholder is any person, group, or organisation that has an interest or "stake" in a project. This means they can affect the project or be affected by its outcome. In a building project, stakeholders are all the individuals and bodies who are involved in the process from the initial idea to the final completion and use of the building.
Think of it like cooking a big pot of jollof rice for a family gathering. The stakeholders would include: The person whose idea it was (the "client"). The person providing the money for the ingredients. The cook who knows the recipe (the "professional"). The people who will eat the jollof (the "end-users"). Even the neighbours who smell the aroma!
Everyone has a stake in the jollof turning out well. It's the same in construction, but with more defined professional roles. B. Key Stakeholders in a Ghanaian Construction Project and Their Roles
