Welcome, students! Every single day, from the *waakye* or *koko* you eat for breakfast to the cotton in your school uniform, your life is touched by agriculture. It is not just about old men with cutlasses on a farm; it is a modern, dynamic science and business that forms the very backbone of Ghana's economy and society. This lesson will introduce you to the fundamental concept of agriculture, exploring what it truly means, why it is critically important for our survival and development as a nation, and the different areas or branches that make up this vast field.
A. The Meaning of Agriculture
The word "Agriculture" comes from two Latin words: 'Ager' which means field or soil. 'Cultura' which means cultivation.
So, literally, agriculture means "field cultivation." However, the modern definition is much broader.
Simple Definition: Agriculture is the art and science of growing crops and raising animals for human use.
