Lesson summary

This lesson is about keeping ourselves safe when we are near roads. In Ghana, our towns and villages are busy with cars, trotros, okadas, and people. Roads can be dangerous if we do not know the rules. Learning how to be safe near roads helps us to walk to school, go to the market with our parents, and play in our communities without getting hurt. We will learn the important rules that every child must know to be a "Road Safety Champion."

Lesson notes

This lesson focuses on three main ideas to keep us safe on the road.

Concept 1: The Traffic Light (The Road Director)

The traffic light is like a director for cars and people. It has three colours, and each one gives an important instruction. RED Light (Stop!) Explanation: When the light is red, it means all cars, trotros, and okadas must STOP. They are not allowed to move. It is the most powerful light! Imagine a big hand telling everyone to wait. Example: If you and your mother are waiting to cross the road and you see the traffic light turn red for the cars, it is a good sign that it might soon be safe for you to cross (but you must still check!). YELLOW Light (Get Ready!) Explanation: The yellow light is a warning. It tells drivers to get ready because the light is about to change. If it was green, it will soon turn red (so they should slow down). If it was red, it will soon turn green (so they can get ready to go). We should WAIT when we see the yellow light. Example: When the light turns yellow, a trotro driver will start to slow down to stop. It is not yet safe to cross. GREEN Light (Go!) Explanation: When the light is green, it means it is the CARS' TURN TO GO. They can now move forward. This means it is NOT safe for people to cross the road. Important Note for Children: Even if a special walking light (a green man) says you can go, you must *always* still look and listen before you cross.

Concept 2: The Golden Rule of Crossing: Stop, Look, Listen!
