Lesson summary

This lesson introduces learners to the concept of capacity – how much a container can hold. This is a fundamental concept in measurement that children encounter daily. In Ghana, from fetching water in a bucket ('veronica bucket' or 'Kufuor gallon'), to buying a bottle of sobolo or a sachet of 'pure water', understanding which container holds more or less is a practical life skill. This hands-on lesson will use familiar objects to help learners explore, compare, and describe capacity in a fun and engaging way.

This lesson is about understanding "how much stuff" can fit inside something. We call this capacity.

Key Idea 1: What is Capacity? Capacity is the amount of liquid (like water, sobolo) or dry material (like sand, gari, rice) that a container can hold. A container is anything that can hold things. Examples: a cup, a bottle, a bowl, a pot, a bucket. A container with a big capacity can hold a lot. A container with a small capacity can hold only a little.

Key Vocabulary and Concepts: Full: The container is filled to the very top. It cannot hold any more. *Teacher's prompt:* "Look at this bottle of water. I cannot add any more water. It is full." Empty: The container has nothing inside it. *Teacher's prompt:* "This cup has no water in it. It is empty." Half-full: The container is filled to about the middle. *Teacher's prompt:* "This bottle is not full, and it is not empty. The water is in the middle. It is half-full." Holds More / More Than: When comparing two containers, the one with the bigger capacity *holds more*. Holds Less / Less Than: The container with the smaller capacity *holds less*.
