This lesson introduces learners to the fundamental concepts of addition ("putting together") and subtraction ("taking away") using numbers up to 20. These skills are essential for everyday life. In Ghana, we use addition and subtraction daily, from buying kenkey at the roadside to sharing fruits with our friends or counting the number of cars passing by. This lesson will use familiar objects like bottle caps, stones, and story-telling to make these mathematical ideas easy to understand and fun to learn.
This week's lessons focus on two main ideas: Addition and Subtraction. We will use a "Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract" approach. We start with things we can touch (concrete), move to drawings (pictorial), and finally introduce the number sentences (abstract).
Materials Needed: Bottle caps, pebbles, seeds, or counters (at least 20 per child/group) Chalkboard/whiteboard and chalk/markers Large, visible number line drawn on the floor or on the board (0-20) Worksheets with simple problems (for independent practice) Concept 1: Addition (Putting Together)
Explanation: Addition means joining two or more groups of things together to find out the total number. We use words like "add," "plus," "altogether," "total," and "join" to talk about addition. The symbol for addition is the plus sign (+). The symbol that means "the same as" is the equals sign (=).
Step-by-Step Example (Concrete to Abstract): Imagine this story: *“Adwoa has 7 pencils in her bag. Her father buys her 5 more pencils. How many pencils does Adwoa have altogether?”* Concrete Step: Ask the learners to represent Adwoa's first pencils. "Let's count out 7 bottle caps for Adwoa's pencils." Place 7 bottle caps in one group. (Learners do the same). "Now, her father gives her 5 more. Let's count out 5 more bottle caps." Place 5 bottle caps in a second group. "To find the total, we put them all together. Let's push the two groups together and count them all." Count together, touching each cap: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7... (pause)... 8, 9, 10, 11, 12. "So, Adwoa has 12 pencils altogether." Pictorial Step: On the board, draw the story. Draw 7 circles (pencils). `OOOOOOO` "Now we add 5 more." Draw 5 more circles. `OOOOO` "Let's count all the circles we have drawn." Count them together to get 12. Abstract Step: Introduce the number sentence. "We can write this story using numbers and signs." Write on the board: 7 + 5 = 12 Read it aloud: "Seven plus five equals twelve." Concept 2: Subtraction (Taking Away)
