Lesson summary

In our communities in Ghana, we see many cars, trotros, aboboyaas, and okadas on our roads every day. Many of us walk to school, the market, or church. Knowing how to be safe near these busy roads is one of the most important lessons we can learn. This lesson will teach us how to be "Road Safety Champions" by learning simple but life-saving rules to protect ourselves and our friends when we are near the road.

Lesson notes

This lesson focuses on simple, memorable rules for staying safe near roads. We will break them down into easy steps.

Concept 1: The Traffic Light (The "Robot")

The traffic light helps to control the movement of cars and people to keep everyone safe. It has three colours, and each has a special job. RED light: What it means for cars: STOP! Cars, trotros, and okadas must stop and wait. What it means for us (pedestrians): When the cars have stopped for the red light, and we see the 'green man' sign for walking, it is our turn to cross. We must still look carefully before we cross. Simple rhyme: "Red light, red light, what do you say? I say STOP, right away!" YELLOW (or Amber) light: What it means for cars: GET READY! The light is about to change. Cars will either get ready to stop (if it was green) or get ready to go (if it was red). What it means for us: WAIT! It is not safe to start crossing. We must wait for the light to change. Simple rhyme: "Yellow light, yellow light, what do you mean? I mean WAIT, till the light is green (for the cars)." GREEN light: What it means for cars: GO! It is the car's turn to move. What it means for us: DANGER! We must NEVER cross the road when the traffic light is green for the cars. We have to wait patiently on the pavement. Simple rhyme: "Green light, green light, what do you say? I say GO, drive away!"

Concept 2: The Golden Rule - Stop, Look, and Listen
