Lesson summary

This lesson introduces our young learners to the concept of subtraction, which we will call "taking away." This is a very important skill they use every day without even realising it. When they share their biscuits with a friend, when they spend their pesewas at the school canteen, or when some of their playthings get lost, they are experiencing subtraction. By understanding how to "take away" in maths, they can solve simple problems in their daily lives, making them more confident and observant. This lesson will use familiar objects like stones, bottle caps, and local food items to make learning fun and practical.

Lesson notes

Concept 1: What is Subtraction?

Subtraction is simply "taking away." It is the process we use when we want to find out how many things are left after some have been removed from a group. We start with a total number of items, remove a smaller number, and then count what remains. Key Vocabulary: Take away: This is the main phrase we will use. It means to remove. Subtract: Another word for take away. Minus: This is the name for the subtraction sign (-). Are left / Remainder: This tells us the answer we are looking for. Equals: This means "the same as." We use the equals sign (=).

Concept 2: Using the Minus (-) and Equals (=) Signs

In mathematics, we use special signs to write down our actions. The minus sign (-) looks like a small dash. It tells us to "take away" or "subtract." The equals sign (=) looks like two small dashes on top of each other. It tells us the final answer, or what is left.
