Lesson summary

This week, we are learning a very exciting skill in numeracy called addition. Addition is simply about joining groups of things together to find out how many we have in total. We do this every day in our lives in Ghana! When Mummy gives you 2 more pieces of yam to add to the 1 piece on your plate, you are using addition. When you and your friend put your toy cars together to play, you are using addition to see how many cars you have altogether. Learning this helps us count better and solve simple problems at home, in the market, and at school.

Concept 1: What is Addition?

Addition is the big name we give to the simple idea of putting things together. When we add, we combine two or more small groups to make one big group. Then, we count everything in the big group to find the total or sum.

Think of these words, they all mean we need to add: Put together Combine Join Altogether In all More

For example, if you have 3 mangoes and your friend gives you 2 more mangoes, you put them all together to find how many you have in total.
