This week, we will be learning how to solve "story problems" using addition. Addition is something we use every day in Ghana. When we go to the market and buy 3 tomatoes and then 2 more onions, we use addition to know how many items we have in total. When we are playing with our friends and more friends join, we use addition to count how many we are altogether. Learning to solve these story problems helps us become smart thinkers and use maths in our real lives.
This lesson focuses on turning simple stories into maths problems that we can solve.
Concept 1: What is an Addition Story Problem? An addition story problem (or word problem) is a short story that gives us some numbers and asks a question that we can answer by adding those numbers together. It's like a puzzle! Key Words to Listen For: The story will often use special words that tell us to add. When you hear these words, you know you need to combine the groups. altogether in total join add and more
Concept 2: The Steps to Solve an Addition Story We can follow three simple steps to solve any addition story problem. We will use bottle caps, stones, or our fingers as our "counters". Step 1: LISTEN and UNDERSTAND the Story. Listen carefully as the teacher tells the story. Find the two numbers in the story. Step 2: SHOW the Story with Objects. Use your counters to make the first group. Use your counters to make the second group. Step 3: SOLVE by Combining and Counting. Push the two groups of counters together to make one big group. Carefully count all the counters in the big group. The final number you count is the answer!
