Lesson summary

This lesson focuses on teaching our young learners the importance of playing safely. In Ghana, children love to play active games like *ampe*, football in the compound, and *pilolo*. While these games are excellent for their physical development, they can also lead to injuries if safety rules are not followed. This lesson will equip learners with the knowledge and skills to enjoy their playtime indoors and outdoors while keeping themselves and their friends safe from harm. Understanding these rules builds a foundation for responsible behaviour and reduces accidents at school and at home.

Lesson notes

This lesson is built around the core concept of "Safe Play." It is crucial to explain this in language that KG2 learners can easily understand.

Concept 1: What is Safe Play? Safe play means having fun in a way that does not cause an "ouchie" to you or your friends. It is playing happily so that everyone goes home at the end of the day without cuts, bruises, or tears. Teacher's Explanation: "My dear children, when we play, we want to laugh and be happy. We do not want anyone to cry because they got hurt. Safe play is like putting a gentle wall around our fun to protect us. It means we think before we act. We use our eyes to look, our ears to listen to rules, and our gentle hands to play."

Concept 2: Why is Safe Play Important? It is important so that we can keep our bodies healthy and strong, continue to come to school to learn and play, and make our parents and teachers proud and happy. Teacher's Explanation: "Imagine you are running in the classroom and you fall and hit your head. Ouch! You might have to go to the hospital, and you would miss playing with your friends. But if you walk carefully, you stay safe, you stay in school, and you can play again tomorrow! Playing safely shows that you care about your friends and you care about yourself."
