This week, we will explore the exciting world of adding! Adding is something we do every day in Ghana, even when we don't realise it. When Mama goes to the market and buys 3 tomatoes and then adds 2 more, she is adding. When you have 4 of your favourite Kaka sweets and a friend gives you 1 more, you are adding to find your new total. Learning how to add helps us understand how things grow in number and is a very important skill for counting money, sharing with friends, and playing games. This lesson will use familiar objects like stones, bottle caps, and our own fingers to make adding fun and easy to understand.
Core Idea: What is Adding?
Adding is simply "putting things together" or "joining groups" to find out the total number of items you have. When we add, the number we get is always bigger than the numbers we started with (unless we add zero!).
Key Vocabulary: Add / Plus (+): This means to join or combine groups. The '+' sign is called the "plus" sign. We can read '3 + 2' as "three plus two" or "three add two". Equals (=): This means "is the same as" or "makes". The '=' sign is the "equals" sign. It shows us what the total is. Altogether / Total / Sum: These words all mean the final number we get after we have added everything together.
