Lesson summary

This lesson focuses on Road Safety, a critical life skill for our young learners in Ghana. As they grow, they will encounter roads more frequently, whether walking to school with a guardian, going to the market, or playing near their homes. Understanding the basic rules of how to behave near and on the road can prevent accidents and keep them safe. This lesson will empower our learners with the knowledge and practical skills to protect themselves from the dangers of traffic involving cars, 'trotros', and 'okadas'.

Lesson notes

This lesson introduces the fundamental principles of road safety in a way that is easy for KG2 learners to understand.

Concept 1: What is Road Safety? Road safety means following special rules to keep us safe when we are near roads. Roads are for vehicles like cars, buses ('trotros'), and motorbikes ('okadas'). The pavement or side of the road is for people. When we mix people and cars without rules, accidents can happen. So, we must all be very careful.

Concept 2: Safe Places and Ways to Cross the Road Not every part of the road is safe for crossing. We must always look for special, safe places. Zebra Crossing: Explanation: A zebra crossing is a special place on the road marked with wide white and black stripes, like a zebra. It is a signal to drivers that people may be crossing there. When you cross at a zebra crossing, drivers are supposed to stop for you. Ghanaian Context: "You can see these in busy towns like Accra near the big shops or in Kumasi. Even if you are at a zebra crossing, you must still wait for cars to stop completely before you cross." Footbridge: Explanation: A footbridge is a bridge built high over a very busy road (like a motorway). It is the safest way to cross because you are completely away from the cars. You walk up the stairs, across the bridge, and down the other side. Ghanaian Context: "We have big footbridges on the N1 Highway in Accra or near KNUST in Kumasi. They help us cross very fast and busy roads without any danger." With a Trusted Adult: Explanation: The most important rule for a child is to ALWAYS hold the hand of a trusted adult (like Mama, Papa, an aunty, or a teacher) when crossing any road. The adult can see further and judge the speed of cars better. Never cross a road alone.

Concept 3: Understanding the Traffic Light (The "Robot") The traffic light helps to control the cars and people on the road. It has three colours, and each one tells us what to do. RED light: Meaning: STOP! Explanation for learners: "When the light for the cars is RED, it means all the cars, trotros, and okadas must stop. This is often the safest time for people to cross the road, but you must still look carefully." YELLOW (or Amber) light: Meaning: GET READY / WAIT! Explanation for learners: "The YELLOW light is a warning. It means the light is about to change. If you see yellow, it means WAIT. Do not start crossing. Cars might be getting ready to go or trying to stop quickly." GREEN light: Meaning: GO! Explanation for learners: "When the light for the cars is GREEN, it means it is their turn to GO. It is very DANGEROUS for us to cross the road now. We must wait patiently on the pavement until the light turns red for the cars."
