This week, we begin an exciting journey into addition! Addition is something we do every day in our lives here in Ghana. When we go to the market and buy 2 tomatoes and then 3 more onions, we are adding. When we are playing with our friends and have 4 marbles and win 2 more, we are adding. Understanding how to "put things together" helps us know "how many altogether." This is a very important skill for counting money, sharing food, and playing games. This lesson will use familiar objects to make learning how to add fun and easy.
This lesson focuses on the foundational concept of addition, which is combining sets. At the KG2 level, we do not focus on the abstract symbols (+) and (=) initially. Instead, we focus on the physical action and the language of "putting together."
Concept 1: What is a Set? A set is simply a group or a collection of similar things. Before we can add, learners must understand what a group is. Example: A group of 5 bottle caps is a set. A group of 3 pencils is another set. We can see them, touch them, and count them.
Concept 2: What is Addition (Putting Together)? Addition is the act of joining two or more sets to find out the total number of items. The key idea is that we are making a bigger group from smaller groups. Language: We use simple, active words like: "Put together" "Join" "And... makes..." "How many altogether?"
Step-by-Step Process for Concrete Addition: Identify the First Set: Count the objects in the first group. Identify the Second Set: Count the objects in the second group. Combine Physically: Move all the objects from both sets into one single pile. Count the Total: Carefully count all the objects in the new, combined pile. This final count is the answer.
