This lesson introduces learners to the fundamental concept of comparing quantities. In our daily lives in Ghana, we are always comparing things: which bowl of fufu is bigger, which group of friends has more players for a game of ampe, or who has fewer coins. By learning to compare groups of objects using terms like "more than," "less than," and "same as," learners develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are essential for both higher mathematics and everyday decision-making. This lesson will use hands-on activities with familiar objects to make the concepts concrete and relatable.
This lesson is built around three core mathematical concepts for comparison: More Than, Less Than, and Same As. The main strategy we will use is one-to-one correspondence, which is matching one item from the first group to one item from the second group. Concept 1: More Than
"More than" means a larger amount or a bigger number. When we compare two groups, the group that has items left over after matching is the one with more.
